What are the admission requirements to the English Language Program?
All adults are welcome in our program.
A registration test is given to each student so that they may be
placed in a class that fits their English abilities – we provide
classes from basic to advanced ESL. We offer practical English classes
rather than academic preparation courses.
How can I pay for the courses?We take Mastercard, Visa, debit, and cash. The classes are payable
upon registration.
What kind of Visa do I need to study at the English Language Program?
You
do not need a VISA to study noncredit courses in Canada for six months
or less. If your stay is longer, you need to apply for an extension.
What does tuition cover?
Tuition includes the registration fee, 5% GST and all classroom materials.
How is the YWCA English language program different from other English programs in Calgary?
Our program is designed to help you develop your ability to communicate with native English speakers. Because we are a non-profit institution, or cost is lower than most other schools in Calgary, yet our instructors are highly qualified and experienced.
Are any advance materials and different itineraries available?
No. We are student-centered.
That means each term our topics are determined by the needs of the
students in the class.
How many students are in each class?
Class
size ranges from 8 to 16 students. The larger classes have a volunteer
teaching assistant to help the students practice English in small
groups or one on one.
Do I need insurance?
We
recommend purchasing Travel Health Insurance either from your home
country or within the first week of arrival. This is because a visit to
a doctor may cost more than $150.
How do I get downtown from the Calgary airport when I arrive?
There
is an airport shuttle bus that is located in the airport directly
across from the exit from Immigration. There are also taxis waiting
outside. If you are staying at a homestay, it can be arranged that the
family picks you up.
How much does it cost to live in Calgary?
Plan on about $2000 a month for everything; housing, transportation, school, food, and entertainment.
What should I bring?
If
you decide to live at a homestay, you need to bring personal items. If
you decide to rent an unfurnished apartment, you'll need everything
from bedding to kitchen items.
